If you are a fan of New Orleans food, this is the place to go in South Bend. The Cafe has a strong New Orleans decor as well as menu. We're talking casual NOLA food, not Brennan's or Emeril's. The menu is replete with new orleans goodies such as jambalaya, muffalettas, beignets, cafe au lait, and many other pleasant surprises. The original muffaletta is difficult to duplicate (I have tried many times) but Heather - the owner - has come very close to Central Grocery's version (the original). Also, they have a full selection of coffees that can be construed into all the trendy and not so trendy coffee permutations. This place is a gem.

This place is great! Its a cozy little place in downtown South Bend. The beignets taste just like the ones in New Orleans. LOTS OF POWDERED SUGAR! Their coffee drinks are excellent as well.

Chicory Cafe is a nice relaxing space with some great menu items mixed with some m'eh beverages. I wasn't there on a night when they had music, but I loved how much space they had to accommodate a large crowd if necessary -- all without sacrificing the intimacy of those who simply want a cool place to just chill. I had two drinks during my visit -- a chai latte and an Italian-inspired watermelon mojito-style drink. Neither were that great. The mojito had an odd aftertaste and the chai was either poorly made or from a bad mix. That's a shame because everything else was on point. On the other hand, the jambalaya was awesome! It had the perfect blend of texture, flavor and heat that comes from either natural talent or years of practice. I would definitely recommend it. I also enjoyed the beignets. They're not for the health conscious, but certainly worth the money. A bit awkward to eat (but aren't all beignets like that?), the powdered sugar isn't excessive and the bread isn't too doughy or too crispy. If I'm ever up South Bend's way, I'd visit Chicory Cafe again. It's clean, quiet, spacious and close to plenty of parking. Although a weekday visit might tell a different story about the parking. If you go and can't stick around, order the jambalaya to go. I guarantee you'll be back.

Wow, wish is found this place sooner when I was in south bend. Tasty lattes with a variety of flavors, including a seasonal pumpkin. Latte flavor wasn't robust, but was discernible and nice. Beignet were surprisingly good, too, very fluffy and a great price sandwiches are about $7. Friendly staff. Lots of little tables inside. Right in the downtown area.

A very nice place if you're looking for a casual restaurant / cafe. They are known for their coffee variety. But also, you should know that they have an excellent menu. Really good food. Personally I like the Italiano. Very good. I would suggest trying the food in addition to the coffee. The owners are usually there and take a lot of pride in the Chicory Cafe. Ask for Phil or Jeff and get to know them. Very nice guys. Free wifi. Great place if you just want to chlll and enjoy New Orleans French Quarter ambiance, good food and nice people.

The best! Food,wine,coffee, music, love it!!! I come to the chicory every other week or so. Usually on Fridays for the food and music! I have never been disappointed here. Highly recommend the po boys! Or the jambalaya or the Mac and cheese!

In South Bend's downtown this is really the only place I would suggest for coffee. They are much better than the South Bend Chocolate Company which used to be the only show in town back in the early 2000s, but the SBCC is not great when it comes to Chocolate (way behind the times) or Coffee (ditto). Chicory Cafe is a small business run by some very cool people and they prepare everything on the spot. They are famous for the New Orleans style coffee and the home made beignets (a-la Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans). They seem to have problems with the free wifi so you might have to ask for them to reset the router. I have had this happen a few times.

This place was great. I was passing through South Bend and saw a place offering some beignets, so I had to stop. I was really happy to see gelato, many different kinds of baked goods and tons of drink offerings. I ended up with a Spanish latte and a cookie ice cream sundae. The service was awesome. The store keeper kept checking on me and I later told her that she had so many offerings that she derailed my initial order. I told her I was planning on getting some beignets to go. Before I got up to leave she brought me some and a cookie and would not let me pay. I really wish this place was closer to where I live. Food, drinks, service, and value was top notch.

This is my fave coffeeshop in South Bend and I don't drink coffee. Their chai latte's are amazing, and the shop is warm and welcoming. The staff is nice and the prices aren't too bad. Definitely would recommend to someone who doesn't want the corporate starbucks feel.

This is my favorite restaurant in South Bend! They're menu is fantastic and you can never misorder. Everyone is very friendly every time I go there and the atmosphere is always welcoming and calm. When in doubt go to Chicory.

This is a cool little place with great coffee and I'm not a coffee drinker. When I do partake, My husband often asks if I'd like some coffee with my syrup, as I usually ask for 2-3 extra pumps. I had a latte with chocolate, caramel and hazelnut syrup and it was really good! I could barely taste the coffee, which, for me, is a great thing. The shrimp ok boy was okay. The shrimp itself was good. It has a nice flavor and was cooked perfectly. I've spent a ton of time in NOLA, as I have family there, and if I'm being completely honest, the flavor wasn't authentic. I also got the beignets and they were much too dense and doughy for me to actually eat. I'll just get my beignet fix on my next trip to NOLA. The ambience is really great and if I lived here, I could see myself spending a lot of time here with my laptop.

The chicory cafe was SO cozy. I sat in an over sized leather couch and enjoyed an iced vanilla latte AND (by suggestion of our friendly server) some AH-mazing beignets . The vanilla latte was just sweet enough (not overly sugary/syrupy) and the doughy in the middle crispy on the outside pastries were the perfect compliment. I noticed some live music events being advertised and a very enticing promise of a build your own Bloody Mary bar which means I totally have plans for coming back to give the cafe a fifth star

Coffee , live music and atmosphere are great. Food is good...can be hit or miss. I had crawfish macaroni and cheese that was fantastic...shrimp poorboy was below average. Beignets are kind of heavy and greasy. I think they struggle to provide a lot of options and would do better to make 25 menu items that are out of this world, than 80 that are not always executed well. For coffee or a beer and live music...Chicory is well worth it. Service has always been good and friendly.

Maybe I'm missing something? I do not see the big deal with this cafe. I was really excited to hear of a great, local coffee place in South Bend. We carved out some extra time in our schedule to make sure we stopped in and I was disappointed. I got the iced coffee and the body was weak and the flavor left much to be desired. My husband got the vanilla latte and it was so overly sweet he only drank 1/4 of it. Don't think we'll be rolling through here again.

Summary- Cajun cafe gets it all right. Extra points for $2 kids menu. Food- 5 Stars Great muffuletta although the bread could be a little thinner for me but overall super delicious. Fantastic! Super friendly people work here. The food is really awesome. Their homemade hemp sauce pasta can take up to 20 minutes to come out of the kitchen and well worth it. Yummy! The double ham and Swiss sandwich is fresh, top quality, savory, and well worth the modest price. The beignets are better than NOLA. Cute atmosphere.

This is probably the best restaurant in downtown South Bend (not that it has a lot of competition), so if you are in the city center and need a coffee or a bite to eat, you should head here. The coffee is good (but not great), and the Cajun dishes, while certainly not rivaling any restaurants in New Orleans, are pretty tasty.

Love this place now that they've expanded it. I'm especially a fan of the beer selections now. I usually get a cafe au lait. It's a bit weaker than I like because I tend to drink espresso. I like the beignets but the serving size is too much for one so I usually forego them.

Chicory's recent expansion doubled their seating, which is great, especially for lunch time work meetings. The prices are great and the menu is different than any other South Bend cafe. Cajun food, po boys, beignets, coffee with chicory. Delicious! Perfect place to catch up with friends, especially on a Saturday morning before a trip to the farmer's market.

The Chicory Cafe has a great coffee shop atmosphere. All the menu items are beautifully etched on the wall next to the register area. The menu is very appealing with lots of non traditional options. The casual seating is very inviting and there was a band playing the evening we stopped in. The food won the show on this one. Everything was amazing. I can't wait to come back and try some more. The vegetarian mac n cheese we ate was very heavy actually with all the cheese and cream. Don't underestimate it. Additionally the soup I had was very interesting with pumpkin and apple performing the lead roles. Wonderful though. The beignets finished everything very well. Fried just right and topped with heaps of powdered sugar. The prices were just right as well.

Such an unexpected find of Cajun goodness! The service here was very friendly. I got the classics: beignets, cafe au lait, and jambalaya. They were all really good. The beignets were as good as the ones I had at cafe du monde, if not better. The jambalaya was on the salty side but had a lot of flavor to it. Cafe au lait tasted authentic and was made with the house chicory roast. The menu has a wide variety of offering, including a slew of delicious drinks (alcoholic, caffeinated, everything else). This brought back many fond memories of New Orleans. Will definitely be back anytime I'm in the area.

My partner is from New Orleans and this place makes him feel a part of home is not far. We love this place because of the food, drinks, and atmosphere. Its just so welcoming and just gives you that NOLA comfort. This place had 5 stars from the moment I walked in. On a Friday night in downtown South Bend (Notre Dame territory), I walk into a charming cajun cafe painted with bright orange walls with live music being performed by Brooke Annibale. Oh happy accident, how I love thee! Yelp drew me in, and once I saw beignets listed in the reviews, it was clear that the car would drive itself to Chicory Cafe! I adore beignets. :) The staff, two ladies, were so engaging and even though it was close to closing time, took genuine interest in helping me pick the perfect cup of coffee, a Spanish latte (chicory coffee with steamed/foamed sweetened condensed milk and a hint of cinnamon). Stellar choice! As she handed it to me, she said, "I didn't put the lid on yet, and I wanted to see your reaction when you tasted it. I'm so excited for you to taste it for the first time!" How cute is that?! They made sure the 4 orders of beignets I was about to transport to family was packaged in such a way to ensure freshness; wrapped well with the powdered sugar separated ensuring a fresh and lightly dusted sprinkle at home, instead of a gloppy been sitting around absorbing kind of thing. I planned to order a small cup of jambalaya, and an order of beignets. Then I saw the Andouille Mac and cheese listed on the huge blackboard menus-- and THEN I saw the Andouille Alfredo pasta with garlic and cremini mushrooms listed, and IT.WAS.ON. Seriously could not pass that up, and at $11 a la carte, I would order that again in a heartbeat. Rich, creamy Alfredo over a corkscrew pasta and chunks of andouille sausage, garlic and mushrooms mixed throughout? Pure decadence. My husband chose the Creole Club sandwich and it was a great sandwich, hitting marks for flavor, texture, freshness and an all around good deal at $6. Not huge, but quite filling and hearty. No complaints from the hubby. I tasted it too, and I agree, delicious! As I waited for our orders, I was able to enjoy 2 live performers and I enjoyed one so much, I bought her CD on the spot! Got a picture with her and chatted briefly with her. Her voice was perfection live and in person, just as flawless as the produced CD. I'd never heard of her but I think many will be hearing about Brooke Annibale soon. Kind of a Plumb meets Sarah MacGlauchlin meets Jewel kind of vibe. Beautiful voice, sweet girl. Heads up, she'll be at Uncommon Ground in Chicago in October 2013. Guess who will also be there? Yup, I sure will. Stated simply, everything we had was fantastic, the performers were sensational and low key, atmosphere was chill, and we plan to hit this back up on our way out of town again. No question. (This was a GREAT find. So glad I happened across the Yelp listing, and found David P and Chris W's reviews-- and even happier we did NOT settle for Hardee's! LOL)

After many visits I think the place deserves an update to 5 stars due to the consistency of food quality and friendliness of the beautiful ladies behind the counter. Tldr; big space; good music, food, atmosphere, and selections; decent parking. Great decor and lovely atmosphere, a great place to relax or study at your leasure. The space is pretty large and there plenty of things to do even if you go without much of a plan. I saw several board games for when you want to play with friends, and they have game nights and live music nights, of which included a fusion jazz group and indie pop. If you just go alone or just want some quiet, they also have books and nights without live music. On top of the service and resources their food is absolutely scrumptious. Their coffee was very smooth and their sandwiches were unique enough to stand out among all the coffee shops I've been to around the country. They let you sample the soup beforehand if you have trouble choosing, and despite having a clear favorite, I thought all the soups I tried were delicious. The parking space is pretty decent, being situated on a corner, but in busy hours I wouldn't always expect to find good parking. Also, all the parking I saw nearby was 1-2 hour parking.

Their Capreese sandwich has hints of HONEY!!!! It's so good! I am visiting from California and was craving a mom-and-pops coffee shop to spend an afternoon doing some work. This place definitely hit the spot with their homely couches and short coffee tables. My bro ordered one of their subs and it was delicious too! We wolfed it down so fast we forgot to take pics (oops!). Their dark roast coffee that comes in awesome shaped mugs were superbly rich too. Oh we also had their jambalaya. All I can say is, GET IT. There are a bunch of board games that I didn't get the chance to play, but it's definitely an invitation to come back!

This review is for the basic espresso-based drinks from this place. This is all I had, and shouldn't a coffee-specific place be largely judged on such? After a pretty lackluster experience down the street at Main Street Coffee, this was definitely a step up, hence the 4 stars, though if this were a bigger city with more bean competition there would surely be one less star in my rating. In contrast to the fore-mentioned establishment, the Americano pour was my requested 8oz, rather than 12, for a nice, punchy coffee experience. The pour came out nicely extracted (near 25 sec for those who like the particulars) with a nice crema on top that wafted a deep and pleasant enough nose. The taste was pretty good, especially the lack of burnt notes that were now being cleansed from palate. It was pretty middle of the road for flavor complexity, without any pronounced fruitiness, nuttiness, or lively acidity. It really could have used a bit more acid for a brighter coffee experience. Since Quinn's closed, I'd have to say that this is likely the best choice for coffee in S Bend, even though Indulgence has Intelligentsia-roasted coffees which are usually pretty high up on my coffee liking scale but they somehow fails to deliver their potential.

I've been spoiled by Chicory. I can't drink a latte anywhere else. Seriously the coffee is so wonderful and more affordable than most big chains. If you're a regular, I suggest purchasing a stainless steel reusable mug. They're $20 and you get refills of any 16 oz, non alcoholic drink for the price of a 12 oz. it pays for itself quickly. Also, the FOOD. The Mac and Cheese is so tasty. Uniquely flavored and piping hot every time. Affordable and tasty sandwiches, and the seafood gumbo is to die for (this is coming from someone who generally doesn't like seafood). They also host great music events and my personal favorite downtown South Bend event; the monthly Science Cafe. I will genuinely miss this cafe when we leave South Bend.

I love coming here, especially on the weekends. The food is delicious, although I will always make sure to make room for beignets which are always served piping hot. I'm loving the new expansion as there is now enough room to seat patrons comfortably while having plenty of room to move around. The cappuccinos are delicious and it's one of the few places in town to get a bite to eat that also serves breakfast type food on Sunday's without the hour log wait that is typical of the pancake houses in the area. I love coming here with friends and gives the day a great start.

Nice, cozy place to kill some time or sit back and watch the South Bend winter overrun the outside world. A friend and I generally come here while waiting for take-out from Cambodian Thai. The Americano is pretty good, and the daily specialty blend can be as well, but there seems to be a little bit of a tendency to keep it around longer than it should be kept before brewing a new batch. Staff is always friendly, and Saturday mornings aren't crowded. A pretty typical coffee shop, overall, nice ambiance, friendly staff, and half-decent coffee.

I have never been to another coffee shop with friendlier staff. I am a pretty ugly guy with a lazy eye, huge nose, and a mishapen head. When I walked into Chicory Cafe today, the friendly girl behind the counter absolutely glowed and gave me a huge "hello!!". It wasn't for my good looks for sure. They are just that damn friendly. The coffee is always excellent. I like the lattes, spanish late, bonfire mocha, and the pumpkin cheescake coffee around Thanksgiving. I will go out of my way to stop by for a coffee at this great little cafe. The food is great and they even have gelato. It's a cozy atomosphere with the southern hospitality of New Orleans oozing from the very walls. I have no problems with a Starbucks or Gloria Jeans, but Chicory Cafe is my favorite place to grab some coffee and comfort food. Keep up the good work!

Ahhh, shit, this place is a lot better than my previous review. No, I don't go for the prepackaged jambalaya or freezer beignets, or any of the other food service crap, but the prices are good, some of the food items are really tasty, and people really like the place. The workers are friendly, the music is excellent, the space is clean, comfortable, and inviting, and it is a much better place to take the family than the Chocolate monstrosity next door.

I read the other reviews about the beignets and am I impressed. I've never had one before but the freshness of a hot pastry with powder just quenches your appetite making you want more. Also, I ordered the cajun crawfish mac n cheese - delicious. The different cheeses and topped crust of the mac n cheese was so good. And yes, you will find little bits and pieces of crawfish inside. I'm going to have to try this place again in the near future.

About as authentic New Orleans as you can get. The atmosphere is comfy, in a good way, with a long dining room and tables that are close to each other. The Muffaletta and Po-Boy sandwiches were spot on, as was the Gumbo (when they have it). All of their coffees are fantastic and the chicory roast has become the go-to when I'm in town. Every time I've been in the workers have been very courteous. Only drawback I can think of is the wait time on food, but that's because they make most of it to order in the back. Other than that Chicory is Great.

Tldr; big space; good music, food, atmosphere, and selections; decent parking. Great decor and lovely atmosphere, a great place to relax or study at your leasure. The space is pretty large and there plenty of things to do even if you go without much of a plan. I saw several board games for when you want to play with friends, and they have game nights and live music nights, of which included a fusion jazz group and indie pop. If you just go alone or just want some quiet, they also have books and nights without live music. On top of the service and resources their food is absolutely scrumptious. Their coffee was very smooth and their sandwiches were unique enough to stand out among all the coffee shops I've been to around the country. They let you sample the soup beforehand if you have trouble choosing, and despite having a clear favorite, I thought all the soups I tried were delicious. The parking space is pretty decent, being situated on a corner, but in busy hours I wouldn't always expect to find good parking. Also, all the parking I saw nearby was 1-2 hour parking.

This review is for the basic espresso-based drinks from this place. This is all I had, and shouldn't a coffee-specific place be largely judged on such? After a pretty lackluster experience down the street at Main Street Coffee, this was definitely a step up, hence the 4 stars, though if this were a bigger city with more bean competition there would surely be one less star in my rating. In contrast to the fore-mentioned establishment, the Americano pour was my requested 8oz, rather than 12, for a nice, punchy coffee experience. The pour came out nicely extracted (near 25 sec for those who like the particulars) with a nice crema on top that wafted a deep and pleasant enough nose. The taste was pretty good, especially the lack of burnt notes that were now being cleansed from palate. It was pretty middle of the road for flavor complexity, without any pronounced fruitiness, nuttiness, or lively acidity. It really could have used a bit more acid for a brighter coffee experience. Since Quinn's closed, I'd have to say that this is likely the best choice for coffee in S Bend, even though Indulgence has Intelligentsia-roasted coffees which are usually pretty high up on my coffee liking scale but they somehow fails to deliver their potential.

Chicory Cafe is a nice relaxing space with some great menu items mixed with some m'eh beverages. I wasn't there on a night when they had music, but I loved how much space they had to accommodate a large crowd if necessary -- all without sacrificing the intimacy of those who simply want a cool place to just chill. I had two drinks during my visit -- a chai latte and an Italian-inspired watermelon mojito-style drink. Neither were that great. The mojito had an odd aftertaste and the chai was either poorly made or from a bad mix. That's a shame because everything else was on point. On the other hand, the jambalaya was awesome! It had the perfect blend of texture, flavor and heat that comes from either natural talent or years of practice. I would definitely recommend it. I also enjoyed the beignets. They're not for the health conscious, but certainly worth the money. A bit awkward to eat (but aren't all beignets like that?), the powdered sugar isn't excessive and the bread isn't too doughy or too crispy. If I'm ever up South Bend's way, I'd visit Chicory Cafe again. It's clean, quiet, spacious and close to plenty of parking. Although a weekday visit might tell a different story about the parking. If you go and can't stick around, order the jambalaya to go. I guarantee you'll be back.

It just didn't feel nice inside, it wasn't a place I could see myself passing time. I got a ginger something latte, which was impossibly, unbelievably sweet. Even though I waited for the ice to melt so dilute the powerful syrupy affect, it was still almost undrinkable. Also it smelled like subway inside the cafe. Major redeeming factor was the beignets, which we got to go and ate outside. They were delicious. But I'm still not sure I'll come back here.

About as authentic New Orleans as you can get. The atmosphere is comfy, in a good way, with a long dining room and tables that are close to each other. The Muffaletta and Po-Boy sandwiches were spot on, as was the Gumbo (when they have it). All of their coffees are fantastic and the chicory roast has become the go-to when I'm in town. Every time I've been in the workers have been very courteous. Only drawback I can think of is the wait time on food, but that's because they make most of it to order in the back. Other than that Chicory is Great.

A very nice place if you're looking for a casual restaurant / cafe. They are known for their coffee variety. But also, you should know that they have an excellent menu. Really good food. Personally I like the Italiano. Very good. I would suggest trying the food in addition to the coffee. The owners are usually there and take a lot of pride in the Chicory Cafe. In South Bend's downtown this is really the only place I would suggest for coffee. They are much better than the South Bend Chocolate Company which used to be the only show in town back in the early 2000s, but the SBCC is not great when it comes to Chocolate (way behind the times) or Coffee (ditto). Chicory Cafe is a small business run by some very cool people and they prepare everything on the spot. They are famous for the New Orleans style coffee and the home made beignets (a-la Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans). They seem to have problems with the free wifi so you might have to ask for them to reset the router. I have had this happen a few times.

This place was great. I was passing through South Bend and saw a place offering some beignets, so I had to stop. I was really happy to see gelato, many different kinds of baked goods and tons of drink offerings. I ended up with a Spanish latte and a cookie ice cream sundae. The service was awesome. The store keeper kept checking on me and I later told her that she had so many offerings that she derailed my initial order. I told her I was planning on getting some beignets to go. Before I got up to leave she brought me some and a cookie and would not let me pay. I really wish this place was closer to where I live. Food, drinks, service, and value was top notch.

Nice, cozy place to kill some time or sit back and watch the South Bend winter overrun the outside world. A friend and I generally come here while waiting for take-out from Cambodian Thai. The Americano is pretty good, and the daily specialty blend can be as well, but there seems to be a little bit of a tendency to keep it around longer than it should be kept before brewing a new batch. Staff is always friendly, and Saturday mornings aren't crowded. A pretty typical coffee shop, overall, nice ambiance, friendly staff, and half-decent coffee.

I have never been to another coffee shop with friendlier staff. I am a pretty ugly guy with a lazy eye, huge nose, and a mishapen head. When I walked into Chicory Cafe today, the friendly girl behind the counter absolutely glowed and gave me a huge "hello!!". It wasn't for my good looks for sure. They are just that damn friendly. The coffee is always excellent. I like the lattes, spanish late, bonfire mocha, and the pumpkin cheescake coffee around Thanksgiving. I will go out of my way to stop by for a coffee at this great little cafe. The food is great and they even have gelato. It's a cozy atomosphere with the southern hospitality of New Orleans oozing from the very walls. I have no problems with a Starbucks or Gloria Jeans, but Chicory Cafe is my favorite place to grab some coffee and comfort food. Keep up the good work!

If you are a fan of New Orleans food, this is the place to go in South Bend. The Cafe has a strong New Orleans decor as well as menu. We're talking casual NOLA food, not Brennan's or Emeril's. The menu is replete with new orleans goodies such as jambalaya, muffalettas, beignets, cafe au lait, and many other pleasant surprises. The original muffaletta is difficult to duplicate (I have tried many times) but Heather - the owner - has come very close to Central Grocery's version (the original). Also, they have a full selection of coffees that can be construed into all the trendy and not so trendy coffee permutations. This place is a gem.

This is a cool little place with great coffee and I'm not a coffee drinker. When I do partake, My husband often asks if I'd like some coffee with my syrup, as I usually ask for 2-3 extra pumps. I had a latte with chocolate, caramel and hazelnut syrup and it was really good! I could barely taste the coffee, which, for me, is a great thing. The shrimp ok boy was okay. The shrimp itself was good. It has a nice flavor and was cooked perfectly. I've spent a ton of time in NOLA, as I have family there, and if I'm being completely honest, the flavor wasn't authentic. I also got the beignets and they were much too dense and doughy for me to actually eat. I'll just get my beignet fix on my next trip to NOLA. The ambience is really great and if I lived here, I could see myself spending a lot of time here with my laptop.

Coffee , live music and atmosphere are great. Food is good...can be hit or miss. I had crawfish macaroni and cheese that was fantastic...shrimp poorboy was below average. Beignets are kind of heavy and greasy. I think they struggle to provide a lot of options and would do better to make 25 menu items that are out of this world, than 80 that are not always executed well. For coffee or a beer and live music...Chicory is well worth it. Service has always been good and friendly.

The chicory cafe was SO cozy. I sat in an over sized leather couch and enjoyed an iced vanilla latte AND (by suggestion of our friendly server) some AH-mazing beignets . Maybe I'm missing something? I do not see the big deal with this cafe. I was really excited to hear of a great, local coffee place in South Bend. We carved out some extra time in our schedule to make sure we stopped in and I was disappointed. I got the iced coffee and the body was weak and the flavor left much to be desired. My husband got the vanilla latte and it was so overly sweet he only drank 1/4 of it. Don't think we'll be rolling through here again.

This is probably the best restaurant in downtown South Bend (not that it has a lot of competition), so if you are in the city center and need a coffee or a bite to eat, you should head here. Chicory's recent expansion doubled their seating, which is great, especially for lunch time work meetings. The prices are great and the menu is different than any other South Bend cafe. The Chicory Cafe has a great coffee shop atmosphere. All the menu items are beautifully etched on the wall next to the register area. The menu is very appealing with lots of non traditional options. The casual seating is very inviting and there was a band playing the evening we stopped in. The food won the show on this one. Everything was amazing. I can't wait to come back and try some more. The vegetarian mac n cheese we ate was very heavy actually with all the cheese and cream. Don't underestimate it. Additionally the soup I had was very interesting with pumpkin and apple performing the lead roles. Wonderful though. The beignets finished everything very well. Fried just right and topped with heaps of powdered sugar. The prices were just right as well.

Such an unexpected find of Cajun goodness! The service here was very friendly. I got the classics: beignets, cafe au lait, and jambalaya. They were all really good. The beignets were as good as the ones I had at cafe du monde, if not better. The jambalaya was on the salty side but had a lot of flavor to it. Cafe au lait tasted authentic and was made with the house chicory roast. The menu has a wide variety of offering, including a slew of delicious drinks (alcoholic, caffeinated, everything else). This brought back many fond memories of New Orleans. Will definitely be back anytime I'm in the area.

This place had 5 stars from the moment I walked in. On a Friday night in downtown South Bend (Notre Dame territory), I walk into a charming cajun cafe painted with bright orange walls with live music being performed by Brooke Annibale. Oh happy accident, how I love thee! Yelp drew me in, and once I saw beignets listed in the reviews, it was clear that the car would drive itself to Chicory Cafe! I adore beignets. :) The staff, two ladies, were so engaging and even though it was close to closing time, took genuine interest in helping me pick the perfect cup of coffee, a Spanish latte (chicory coffee with steamed/foamed sweetened condensed milk and a hint of cinnamon). Stellar choice! As she handed it to me, she said, "I didn't put the lid on yet, and I wanted to see your reaction when you tasted it. I'm so excited for you to taste it for the first time!" How cute is that?! They made sure the 4 orders of beignets I was about to transport to family was packaged in such a way to ensure freshness; wrapped well with the powdered sugar separated ensuring a fresh and lightly dusted sprinkle at home, instead of a gloppy been sitting around absorbing kind of thing. I planned to order a small cup of jambalaya, and an order of beignets. Then I saw the Andouille Mac and cheese listed on the huge blackboard menus-- and THEN I saw the Andouille Alfredo pasta with garlic and cremini mushrooms listed, and IT.WAS.ON. Seriously could not pass that up, and at $11 a la carte, I would order that again in a heartbeat. Rich, creamy Alfredo over a corkscrew pasta and chunks of andouille sausage, garlic and mushrooms mixed throughout? Pure decadence. My husband chose the Creole Club sandwich and it was a great sandwich, hitting marks for flavor, texture, freshness and an all around good deal at $6. Not huge, but quite filling and hearty. No complaints from the hubby. I tasted it too, and I agree, delicious! As I waited for our orders, I was able to enjoy 2 live performers and I enjoyed one so much, I bought her CD on the spot! Got a picture with her and chatted briefly with her. Her voice was perfection live and in person, just as flawless as the produced CD. I'd never heard of her but I think many will be hearing about Brooke Annibale soon. Kind of a Plumb meets Sarah MacGlauchlin meets Jewel kind of vibe. Beautiful voice, sweet girl. Heads up, she'll be at Uncommon Ground in Chicago in October 2013. Guess who will also be there? Yup, I sure will. Stated simply, everything we had was fantastic, the performers were sensational and low key, atmosphere was chill, and we plan to hit this back up on our way out of town again. No question. (This was a GREAT find. So glad I happened across the Yelp listing, and found David P and Chris W's reviews-- and even happier we did NOT settle for Hardee's! LOL)

Great place to take our kids. Pleasant atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Even better now that they expanded. We love that you can get great coffee and cocktails in the same place. Crawfish mac and cheese is AMAZING! Our family favorite place to go out to eat!

The coffee is phenomenal. The atmosphere is really what I come for. It's very laid back, relaxing, and they always host events throughout the week. They have different music genres; I've heard everything from reggae to indie. Definitely recommend!

I've been spoiled by Chicory. I can't drink a latte anywhere else. Seriously the coffee is so wonderful and more affordable than most big chains. If you're a regular, I suggest purchasing a stainless steel reusable mug. They're $20 and you get refills of any 16 oz, non alcoholic drink for the price of a 12 oz. it pays for itself quickly. Also, the FOOD. The Mac and Cheese is so tasty. Uniquely flavored and piping hot every time. Affordable and tasty sandwiches, and the seafood gumbo is to die for (this is coming from someone who generally doesn't like seafood). They also host great music events and my personal favorite downtown South Bend event; the monthly Science Cafe. I will genuinely miss this cafe when we leave South Bend.

I love coming here, especially on the weekends. The food is delicious, although I will always make sure to make room for beignets which are always served piping hot. I'm loving the new expansion as there is now enough room to seat patrons comfortably while having plenty of room to move around. The cappuccinos are delicious and it's one of the few places in town to get a bite to eat that also serves breakfast type food on Sunday's without the hour log wait that is typical of the pancake houses in the area. I love coming here with friends and gives the day a great start.

Ahhh, shit, this place is a lot better than my previous review. No, I don't go for the prepackaged jambalaya or freezer beignets, or any of the other food service crap, but the prices are good, some of the food items are really tasty, and people really like the place. The workers are friendly, the music is excellent, the space is clean, comfortable, and inviting, and it is a much better place to take the family than the Chocolate monstrosity next door.

Chicory Cafe is an amazing place to go to just because of the variety of their menu. They have something for everyone. My favorite is the cajun fish po-boy. Their hot chocolate is actually better than the chocolate cafe that's on the same street.

If I wanted to drink coffee that taste like bark on a tree I would go out to my back yard. I do not consider myself a coffee snob but I do not want to drink water and tree bark... Worst cup of coffee I have ever had...

I read the other reviews about the beignets and am I impressed. I've never had one before but the freshness of a hot pastry with powder just quenches your appetite making you want more. Also, I ordered the cajun crawfish mac n cheese - delicious. The different cheeses and topped crust of the mac n cheese was so good. And yes, you will find little bits and pieces of crawfish inside. I'm going to have to try this place again in the near future.

Wow, wish is found this place sooner when I was in south bend. Tasty lattes with a variety of flavors, including a seasonal pumpkin. Latte flavor wasn't robust, but was discernible and nice. Beignet were surprisingly good, too, very fluffy and a great price sandwiches are about $7. Friendly staff. Lots of little tables inside. Right in the downtown area.
